Oranjerie in Leiden
12 appartments + 12 family houses

The Residents initiative "De Oranjerie" in Leiden has been developing their own sustainable project for over 10 years. After a period of research, excursions and many meetings with the city council the area Maredijk/ Aloëlaan was finally designated by the city council.

The collaboration of the residents initiative, the housing association "Ons Doel" and the city council of Leiden resulted in a plan which was developed by BEAR Architects.
The reference of the plan is the courtyard. 12 family houses, appartments and 2 communal spaces were realised around a central shared area.

The plan comprises many sustainable building measures such as larch wooden outer window frames, deal inner window frames, a high insulation value, PV cells in the roof tiles, a central vacuum cleaning system and the use of graywater for flushing toilets.
Really special about the project is the use of the metal roof with included photovoltaic solar energy system. This is a newly developed system and has never been used in Holland before.
