Houses used as a noise barrier
Westerpark Breda (NL)

Cross section of the houses and the wall
The townquarter Westerpark faces the railway Breda - Roosendaal. According to the Law on Noise Protection (Wet op de Geluidhinder), a 9 meters high wall is neccesary to protect the houses against the railway noise.
A row of 48 houses can have the same function to protect the townquarter against the noise from the railroad. A special design has to be made because the houses can only have windows on the quiet south side. The north side is covered with earth.
In front of the houses are garages, carports and stairs to the entrance. To give privacy and to prevent too much enthousiastic but unexpected personal design, the border between garden and public space is built by the client.
To give the people more privacy, the livingroom is situated on the 1st floor. Beside the livingroom is a loggia.
A fixed sun-shading device is part of the design.
The living room has a broad view over the whole town quarter. The many south facing windows make the room very light and sunny.
No railway noise can be heard in the houses. Even on the loggia the noise sounds far away.
