Retrofit with photo-voltaic shading system ECN - building Petten (NL)

The aim of the project is to integrate a PV-system in a new facade for a laboratory building.
The building is built in the early sixties and is technically and functionally outdated. The building has poor thermal insulation, has heat bridges and an inefficient air-conditioning system. The building will be stripped and renewed.

The innovative aspects of the design are:
1. The architectural solution.
2. The integration of PV-system, shading, cooling, and daylighting.
3. New development in the application of sun shading devices.
4. Standard PV-modules integrated in the shading device
5. Good external views.
6. Participation of the users.
For the renewal of the project, both the roof and facades and the HVAC installations will be renewed. This renewal will considerably increase the energy efficiency of the building. Energy consumption will decrease with 75% for thermal energy and 35% of the total electrical energy. The South facade with large windows has been redesigned and will be renewed with a new developed PV-integrated shading system. The quality of the daylight will be improved by the system. This will reduce the electricity consumption.
The project is supported by the EC (Thermie programme), the Dutch national Energy Agency NOVEM and the utility ENW. Consultancy and monitoring is done by ECN.
The sun shading design is engineered in collaboration with Studio di Architecturra di Cinzia Abbate, Rome.
The shading system is done in collaboration with Dasolas (DK) and ALCO (NL).

TNO / TUE made a study of the daylight in the rooms with the application of Radiant softwar.e
