Aula
Cemetery Beukenhage 's-Gravenzande

A cemetry integrated in the surrounding landscape.
Landscape architect, Hollandschap/Eurolandscape, designed this cemetry some years ago.
BEAR Architecten was asked to design a new Aula building instead of the older (smaller) building.

The design is based on the atmosphere of nature. Water, green, air, light and sun create a quiet and serene feeling in the building.

The other idea is to integrate environmental technology, such as passive cooling and solar energy.

The design pays special attention to light and water, which are the ´elements of life´. The rainwater runs slowly from the roof to a basin near the entrance of the building. This symbolizes the passing of time.

Light is entering the building through the long split windows in the wall. Indirect light is entering through the bell tower.

The facade of the building mirrors in the water. The south sun will reflect it's rays through the water into the building.
The cellar and foundation of the original building is used again.
The patio goes up into the roof garden. Ceremonies can be held inside or outside. The slope will be used as an amphitheater.
