Sustainable Building Demonstration project

De Akkers Helmond (NL)

The model - South view
Our motto for the competition 'De Akkers' in Helmond was 'Woon-Plaetse'. 'Wonen' (Living), on the one hand, refers to a contemporary event. 'Plaetse', on the other hand, refers to an age-old type of square which is common in East Brabant. Our design and elaboration of the plan was inspired by country life, which is so characteristic of Brabant.
The lay-out of the area is that of a garden city in which the landscape has been integrated. The design follows from the existing wet and dry ecological/natural areas and the existing allotment pattern. The plan consists of four scale levels:
- three ecologically different areas
- structural main elements (oak lane and 'plaetse')
- scale elements (pattern of ditches, green area)
- living environment (residential streets, boundaries).
The concept of sustainable building can be found in the quality of the environment, the ecological areas, the green areas and water systems and the use of solar energy.
Our plan has been selected and is realised, because it combines all aspects of the plan, such as urban development, architecture, planned economy, ecology, sustainable building and building for disabled.
Characteristics of the plan are:
- cultural heritage,
- water and green of the residential location,
- solar energy concept,
- energy efficiency (heat pump, solar panels),
- sustainable building materials,
- microclimate (green roofs),
- birds nest for endangered birds.
The project is selected as a demonstration project 'Sustainable Building'. Funding of the project is done by 'Green Funding'.
