Terrace houses with Conservatories
Spaland Schiedam

This plan consists of 72 dwellings, of which 26 are sun room dwellings. The dwellings are situated on a waterway. Life here is therefore water-oriented. The sun room on the ground floor and a roof garden adjacent to the studio on the second floor create a private outside area.

The EC demonstration project with sun room dwellings in Spijkenisse served as an example for the second generation sun room dwellings, only this time, the sun room idea has been further developed. Major differences are:
- a larger sun room (approximately 14 m2);
- an additional glass strip in front of the bedrooms on the first floor; and
- mechanical ventilation.

The sun room dwellings are designed to create energy-saving, well-insulated dwellings with little heat loss. The outside walls have been insulated up to Rc = 3.2 si and the U value of the glass used amounts to 1.6 si. The sun room creates additional living space for the occupants and it is energy-saving as well. In clear or sunny weather, the sun room warms up quickly, even in the depths of winter. Therefore, the sun room does not have to be heated. In order to maintain a pleasant room temperature in summer as well, the sun room has been equipped with a closed roof and ventilating windows in the ridge. The big sliding door on the ground floor can be opened entirely. A solar boiler has been placed on the roof for hot-water supply.
