Multi purpose district office in an old utility building
Leiden (NL)

The interior of the former transformer house.
This utility building is a former electricity transformer station. The building style can be described as the civil engineering style from the fifties.
Refurbishing this building we preserved the old atmosphere and designed new additions to make the building functional.

 Ground-floor

Part of the transformer house will be redeveloped into a district office for the city quarter Leiden Noord. The brief consists of a garage, storage, offices, canteen and a locker room. The storage and the locker room are in the cellar. On the ground-floor garage and canteen are combined.

One of the striking aspects of the design is the fact that, despite the considerable change in function of the building, the existing architecture will be maintained and even emphasized. The same goes for the interior. Here, the existing beautiful steel construction (see the interior photos) will be included in the new design.
The garage, where the vehicles can be stored, will be situated in the center of the building, next to the canteen. At the top of this hall, two well insulated 'rooms' will be hung up in between the existing gangways. These rooms will be equipped as offices that overlook the hall. These offices are joined together by a patio with a glass roof. The patio brings fresh air and daylight into the offices.

Within the building, solar cells will be used to generate electricity and solar collectors will support the hot-water supply.
